Learning by level - what you need to know

At Linguva we understand that it’s not just about passing exams but integrating well into German society, or understanding the cultural nuances well. German as a language has six levels of proficiency and each level is more challenging (yet progressively more fun) as you go ahead. So what can you expect at each level?

A1 - The absolute basics

vocabulary of 500 words
At this level, you’re learning to be proficient enough to travel to German speaking states as a tourist. It’s enough to get the message across (most of the time anyway), but you’re still very early on in your journey to mastering the language. You can introduce yourself, place an order at a restaurant and ask for directions (though making sense of the responses may no always be easy.) Your best friend at this stage? Langsam bitte!

A2 - Getting there

vocabulary of 1000 words
When you reach A2, you’re able to understand simple German conversation and express yourself using basic sentences and structures. You won’t be completely lost in a conversation amongst native German speakers and you will know enough German to get by through most of your day. However, you still have some ways to go.

B1 - Intermediate

vocabulary of 2000 words
At the B1 level, you are able to hold a basic conversation in German. You can also read, understand and process German rapidly, and the goal at this stage is to help you grasp the finer grammar rules. Conversations in German should be easier, and you will find yourself thinking in German as you speak. The good news is that at this level – a lot of possibilities open up for your growth, career and life in a German speaking country.

B2 - Advanced intermediate

vocabulary of 4000 words

B2. Finally, the level where you can express yourself fluently in German, understand the finer nuances of the language and even enjoy films, comedy, literature and content. You are also at the level where most jobs are easily accessible because of your language proficiency. This level is enough to allow you to live comfortably in a German-speaking country.

C1 - Advanced

vocabulary of 5000 words

C1 represents a level of mastery over the language. You are now naturally processing thoughts in German, and eligible to study at universities and institutes in a German-taught course as well. Complex topics are easily managed, and you are at ease now. At this level, there is no turning back. You have achieved what you set out for.

C2 - Native

vocabulary of 7000+ words

Not many choose to take on the challenges of C2 level German, but should you choose to do so – our teachers can help you make the grade. If speaking, thinking, reading, writing and listening in and like a German are essential, this is where you need to be. At this level, your proficiency in the language cannot be questioned.
